The 3rd general chapter of our congregation in 1949 decided to open a house in Switzerland in order to start and function a full- fledged procura for the Swiss benefactors of our congregation. The aim of this centre was to reach out to our well-wishers and benefactors with our current apostolic projects and various charitable and humanitarian activities. We also keep our Swiss benefactors abreast of the need and progress of our missions. Their timely financial support makes it possible to accomplish our missions in different parts of the world.
This task was entrusted to one of the Swiss brothers, Andreas Stolz (also known as Bro. Andrew), who camped in Freiburg, Switzerland, and obtained the abrequisite permission of the local ordinary Mons. Francis Chariere, to start and function such a Procura house in this diocese. The Brothers had chosen a little old house known as Schloessli (small castle) in the suburb of Freiburg town. This village is known as Düdingen about 5 km away. This house belonged to Mr. Kessler, a radio handler from Freiburg. Schloessli was blessed on 1st May 1950 and renamed after St. Joseph Garmiswil. Meanwhile, another Swiss missionary, who had been working in India over 20 years, known as Bro. Remigius Jung was appointed Superior of this new centre. He was accompanied by Bro. Hubert Kumpukal, an Indian citizen, and another Swiss national, Bro. Rufinus, as his companions to organize and run the Procura work. Thereafter many brothers of happy memory had rendered their services in this community and a few are still working in other centres of the Congregation.
As a result of the hard work and perseverance of these pioneers and their successors, a well-organised procura system was established and continues to this day. At present, brothers from India have taken over this Procura and continue the legacy of our veteran missionaries with true Franciscan spirit and commitment. The Procura covers the entire Switzerland and functions in German and Italian languages. Now we initiate it in Franch language as well. Ever since this centre was established, we reached out to the poor and marginalized on a large scale according to the directives and guidance of our Superior General. We look forward to many new helping hands and generous hearts to support this noble task so that our humanitarian services will continue to touch and change lives through Christ’s love.
We sincerely thank and pray for all our well-wishers in Switzerland for your timely help and support. We owe it all to you and God our Father to do something substantial for various mission and charitable services in India, Sri Lanka, and South America and now in Ghana. Keeping you all in our daily prayers, we solicit your continual co-operation and support for the success of our mission and apostolic activities.
